The short version

No accounts, no ads, no tracking, no cookies. Only a rough location (rounded to about 10 km) is ever used to look up tides.

Searching for a place

What you type in the search box is sent to Open-Meteo's geocoding service to find matching places.

"Near me"

If you allow it, your browser shares your position. The page rounds it to 0.1 degrees (about 10 km) straight away and only uses that rounded position.

If your browser can't share its location, you can tap "Use rough location instead". The tides.watch server then reads the town Cloudflare associates with your internet connection, rounds it to about 10 km and sends it back to your browser. It isn't stored.

Tide lookups

To get tides, the page sends the rounded location to the tides.watch server, which passes it to WorldTides (Brainware LLC) and caches the answer per area for up to three days so nearby users share one lookup. The server does not store IP addresses or any information about who asked. It runs on Cloudflare, which may process IP addresses to deliver and protect the service under Cloudflare's privacy policy.

What stays on your device

Your saved beaches and the last tides you loaded are kept in your browser's storage on your device so the site works offline. Clearing your browser data removes them.
